Here’s a bit of my story. I was born and raised in New England, growing up with Mom and Dad and three siblings. After high school graduation, I attended college for a year, not really sure why, except that that’s what I was supposed to do. After the one year, I changed the plan—I would jump into the “Real World.”
I did well enough. I was in retail, moving up the ladder. I was responsible for resolving customer service issues; training, scheduling, and reviewing employees; ordering and maintaining inventory; and eventually even hiring and firing personnel. I was meeting the expectations of my job, but I wasn’t getting the satisfaction or fulfillment that I needed.
I started searching for the peace and contentment that I was lacking. I spent time hiking, including section-hiking on the Appalachian Trail for two months. I returned to the University of Connecticut and earned a B.S. in Environmental Science. During my studies, I was also an undergraduate research assistant.
As I was pursuing my B.S., my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. The diagnosis brought turmoil and stress to the whole family. I graduated, but my mind and energies were fixed on trying to manage my mixture of feelings and emotions, as well as trying to help my family deal with the dynamics of each of their array of feelings. There was also the logistics of care for my father and planning and provision for my mother.
Through this adversity, I discovered something. I was stronger than I thought I was—I survived. Not only did I feel that I helped my family during our crisis, but I discovered that it gave me great satisfaction. Fulfillment. And, the moments I shared with my dad I will always treasure.
