The EGO, Dear One, creates thoughts that get in the way of us learning and growing, becoming who we can and want to be.  The EGO wants to be the star; or, the bright and gifted student with natural skill and great potential.  EGO is afraid of being incompetent or a novice, having to work and persevere  at something, in order to become competent and skilled.
